Maki noticed that the email had been sent to her the day of the fire, late in the evening. Busy, busy, he thought.

There was a brief message from one of the geeks who had retrieved all the recent searches and all the messages sent or received or scrubbed on Herbie’s iPad.

“One email Mr. Bonebright thought he’d scrubbed appears to be a threat. It is addressed to Felix Wingate, who is general manager of Longleap Enterprises. Bonebright threatens to reveal damaging information about Longleap unless he is paid a sufficient sum to stay quiet. Details at the morning meeting! P.S. The guy spells worst than my little neece whose 4.”

“Well, well,” Maki said to Rhonda, who was reading the newspaper in bed.

“They’ve found four new species of legless lizards in California,” she announced. “A couple of famous reptile professors did. They thought there was only one species—I’m guessing Roscoe’s—but they searched and searched and found some others. Guess where?”

Maki raised his eyebrows.

“At the end of a runway at LAX, in a vacant lot in downtown Bakersfield, on the edge of the Mojave Desert, and among some oil derricks in the lower San Joaquin Valley.”

“You’re not alone!” she called to Roscoe before returning to the newspaper. “‘The biologists are trying to determine whether the lizards need protected status,’” she read.

“We all need protected status,” Maki said.
